As with any stargazing event, this one is strictly BLACK TIE. NO EXCEPTIONS.
JK dress comfortably and most importantly: WARMLY. At over 5700 feet above sea leavel, it gets chilly in the dead of night.
ACCOMODATIONS
As the event will go to 1 am, accomodations at The Monestary can be had. More details to come on this. It’s over 100 years old and has basic ammenities but will save you an early morning drive down the mountian should you so choose.
THE HOOKER TELESCOPE
After 5 years of grinding the glass and polishing the mirror, the 100″ in diameter telescope opened in 1917 at the top of Mount Wilson in the San Gabriael Mountians near Pasadena.
This Telescope, named the Hooker Telescope, was the largest reflecter telescope in the world until 1949.
EDWIN HUBBLE
Using this very telescope in 1924, astronomer Edwin Hubble made his now famous and paridigm shifting discovory that the “Andromeda” nebula was not a nebula at all, but instead an entire galaxy itself, existing far outside the Milky Way galaxy. This showed us the universe was far far far bigger than anyone had ever dreamed and that out own Milky Way galaxy was just one in billions of other such galaxies.
RSVP NOW!
REMEMBER! Space is limited in the observatory, RSVPs will be accepted first come first served. Please limit guest to one other person 🙂
